Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has said that embracing indigenous culture can significantly improve Nigeria’s democracy.
Obasanjo gave a speech on Wednesday in Abeokuta at the farewell service held in honour of Prof. Chinedum Babalola, the departing vice-chancellor of Chrisland University in Abeokuta.
According to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigerian democracy may be greatly enhanced by embracing indigenous culture.
At the goodbye service for Prof. Chinedum Babalola, the leaving vice-chancellor of Chrisland University in Abeokuta, on Wednesday, Obasanjo spoke.
The previous president observed that the country was not benefiting from Western liberal democracy.
I’ve been preaching about Western liberal democracy all the time, but it’s not working for us or even for the people who gave it to us. The British were grumbling. Democracy has to be reconsidered.
“We have to introduce our culture into the democratic process. African culture talks about communalism rather than hostility; you join together, hash things out, and reason together,” he remarked.
There should be repercussions for wrongdoing, Obasanjo said, adding that important positions were held by Nigerians worldwide.
“We must do it for ourselves, and we are capable of doing it; no one else will do it for us. People are everywhere, I think; you just have to seek them out.
As you can see, Nigerians now lead the two largest development banks in Africa, and Amina Muhammad, the country’s second-ranked female UN representative, is a Nigerian.
They are Nigerians from various regions of the country; we have individuals. These are individuals who can help bring about the improvements the country needs,” he stated.
The departing vice-chancellor was characterised by Obasanjo as a woman of virtue who shown exceptional leadership over her seven years in charge of the university’s operations.
