Donald Trump, the former president, has sued CBS, alleging that the television network’s interview with Vice President Kamala Harris was “doctored” and interfered with the election.
Trump claims that when Harris was questioned about the Israel-Hamas conflict, CBS showed two distinct answers.
He contends that Harris’ “word salad” response on how the Biden administration affected Israel’s behaviour was absent from the 60 Minutes version of the interview that aired on October 6.
Bill Whitaker, the journalist, asked Harris why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not appear to be listening to the United States in a preview of the interview that aired on Face the Nation.
The Face the Nation edition quoted Harris as saying: “Well, Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of steps in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by, or a result of, many things, such as our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.”
Harris was made fun of by Republicans for his lengthy response.
“We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end,” Harris said more succinctly when the same issue was asked the following day during 60 Minutes primetime.
According to Trump’s lawsuit filed in the Northern District of Texas on Thursday, five days before the US election, “CBS crossed the line from the exercise of judgement in reporting to deceitful, deceptive manipulation of news by using its national platform on 60 Minutes to paper over Kamala’s ‘word salad’ weakness.”
As the contentious 2024 presidential election, which President Trump is winning, draws to a close, Trump’s attorneys assert that CBS’ alterations were a “attempt to tip the scales in favour of the Democratic Party.”
The former president wants a jury trial and at least $10 billion in damages.
Fox News acquired the lawsuit, which reads, “President Trump brings this action to redress the immense harm caused to him, to his campaign, and to tens of millions of citizens in Texas and across America by CBS’s deceptive broadcasting conduct.”
Metro’s requests for comment were not immediately answered by CBS or the Trump campaign.
Prior to this, CBS reported that Trump had cancelled an interview he had scheduled with the network.
The complaint was filed soon after Trump called MAGA followers “garbage” during an event in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he also made fun of President Joe Biden and Harris.
A day after making his remarks from a garbage truck, Trump simulated a phone conversation between Biden and Harris in response to the president’s statement.
“I’m at a significant disadvantage, but I’m trying, Joe.” As they say, I’m not smart, and then you go and complicate things for me, Joe. Joe, what are you doing? Trump, posing as Harris, stated.
