The Presiding Bishop of Rhema Christian Church & Towers in Sango Ota, Ogun State, Dr. Taiwo Akinola, has urged the federal government to confront the nation’s economic problems by implementing people-centered policies.
Bishop Akinola encouraged the Bola Tinubu government to reform policies with a “human face” in order to promote prosperity and relieve poverty in an interview with media ahead of the church’s 33rd World Convention, which has as its subject “Exceeding Grace” and is set for November 3–10, 2024.
The necessity for leadership that truly takes into account how its policies affect the public and the economy was emphasised by Bishop Akinola, who will be formally inaugurated as an archbishop during the convention. “Some policies that push people into extreme poverty should be rethought, even though harsh measures may occasionally be required in times of national challenges,” he said.
Akinola recognised the goal of bringing the currency into line with its black-market values while considering recent economic measures, such as the depreciation of the naira. He called on the government to take into account the timeliness and people-centeredness of economic plans, but he also cautioned about the growing hardship faced by average Nigerians.
Following the elimination of subsidies in June 2023, the priest further denounced the escalating cost of fuel, pointing out that the price of gasoline and diesel had risen to above N1,100 and N1,200 per litre, respectively. “Is there any hope in view for the common man?” he said, referring to the Dangote Refinery’s halted progress and the reactivation of older refineries.
In order to alleviate the hardship brought on by the soaring costs of life, particularly in the areas of food, medication, and transportation, Akinola urged the government to implement long-term relief measures. He said that the conference would also prioritise community support by providing free medical consultations, food donations, and camping spaces for participants.
In closing, Akinola invited the public to the convention, where seasoned clergy will gather to bless attendees, including Archbishop Joseph Ojo and Bishop Dr. Francis Wale Oke. His installation as the Charismatic Archbishop of the International Communion of Charismatic and Apostolic Ministers, Christ Global Network, and Rhema Christian Church will mark the conclusion of the conference.
