As more explosions were heard in the city and other areas were hit, Ukraine said on Saturday that Kyiv had been the target of a major drone strike throughout the night.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, “Unfortunately, the Russian drone attack caused damage and casualties in various districts of Kyiv.”
The “continuous terrorist attacks on Ukrainian cities demonstrate that the pressure on Russia and its allies is insufficient,” he claimed.
Amid an air raid alarm, AFP correspondents heard further explosions in Kyiv on Saturday afternoon.
Ukraine’s air force said in the morning that it had shot down 39 of the 71 drones that Russia had launched throughout the night.
The drones targeted the centre Kirovograd and Poltava areas, the Kyiv region around the city, and the Sumy border region.
The air force said that the drone strike was still going on, with 21 drones lost and five sent back to Russia.
According to the air force, residences and apartment complexes in four areas—Kyiv, Sumy, and the Black Sea Odesa region—were damaged by debris from fallen drones.
According to the military government of Kyiv, debris from air defences shooting down drones landed in six districts of the capital, causing blocks of vehicles and apartments to be damaged and igniting many fires in buildings that were put out.
According to the administration, a police officer was hurt.
According to authorities, an 82-year-old woman was wounded by shrapnel in the Kyiv area outside the city.
A 40-year-old lady was retrieved dead from debris in a village close to the southern city of Kherson after Russian forces opened fire, injuring four people, including three children, according to Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
A hospital in Kherson was hit, causing damage to two wards and a laboratory, according to the health ministry.
Because they had sought refuge, the patients and medical staff were unharmed.
Oleksandr Syrsky, the head of Ukraine’s military, issued a warning on Saturday, saying that his forces were “containing one of the most potent Russian attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion.”
