The Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, the Prelate of the Anglican Communion, has expressed his worry that Nigerians are not just starving but also profoundly disenchanted with their government.
Ndukuba made a strong demand for a constitutional convention to design a more people-centered constitution during the funeral ceremony of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which was held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Atta Ikeduru, Imo State.
“People are not only hungry but angry,” he said, reflecting on the challenging circumstances Nigerians are going through. No Nigerian should have to suffer from hunger. The fact that some leaders use palliatives merely to stockpile them is depressing.
Ndukuba reminded individuals in authority that accountability is a necessary component of real leadership. He underlined the value of investing in young people, pointing out that, given the opportunity, Nigerian youth are keen to compete on a global scale. He bemoaned the fact that some religious leaders even show off their wealth during a period of extreme poverty and asked them to refrain from wastefulness, particularly when many Nigerians cannot afford daily meals.
“The best legacy Tinubu can give us is a constitution that Nigerians can truly call their own,” the Prelate added, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to organise a constitutional convention.
Ndukuba, who spoke on the topic of “Serving the Purpose of God in Our Generation,” characterised Iwuanyanwu as a brave leader who had always spoken up for the Igbo people. He urged Iwuanyanwu’s family to preserve his legacy by remaining together and steadfast in their adherence to his principles.
“We can’t expect peace when there is injustice,” Ndukuba added, urging the government to rectify alleged wrongs done to the Igbo people. In light of the fact that “Ndigbo are being treated as second-class citizens,” he asked Ohanaeze Ndigbo to look for a patriotic and courageous leader to carry on Iwuanyanwu’s legacy.
APC National Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, former military governor Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd), former Imo State Governors Rochas Okorocha and Emeka Ihedioha, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, who represented President Tinubu, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi were among the notable Nigerians who attended the funeral service.
Former Senate President Wabara spoke on Iwuanyanwu’s legacy, describing him as a great contribution to the Igbo people and saying that his passing was much felt. Other dignitaries also honoured the several leaders he trained during his lifetime and his lasting contributions to Igbo interests.
