China expresses hopes for “peaceful coexistence” with the US as Trump is about to win.

As Donald Trump draws closer to defeating Kamala Harris in the nation’s presidential election, China expressed its hope for “peaceful coexistence” with the United States on Wednesday.

Speaking at a routine briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated, “We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.”

“We have consistently maintained our policy towards the United States,” she continued.

“The United States presidential election is an internal affair of the United States,” Mao stated, without specifically addressing the prospect of Trump’s reelection.

She declared, “We respect the American people’s choice.”

When asked if Chinese President Xi Jinping will contact Trump to congratulate him, she added, “We will handle related matters in accordance with usual practice after the US election results are released and officially announced.”

China kept a careful eye on the US election.

Trump-related subjects were among the most popular trending topics on the X-like Weibo platform as of 4:00 pm local time on Wednesday.

Trump promised to impose 60 percent tariffs on all Chinese goods entering the nation, and both candidates in last week’s election had promised to take harder measures against Beijing.

In the event of a Trump victory, analysts anticipate a significant stimulus package, which is scheduled to be announced at a gathering of top parliamentarians taking place in Beijing this week, will be greater.

Although it stated that it is against China being exploited as a political issue on the campaign trail, Beijing generally refrains from commenting on elections in other nations.

As president, Trump began a torturous trade war with China, enforcing fluctuating tariffs on Chinese imports for what he claimed were unfair acts by Beijing, including currency manipulation and theft of US technology.

Under his Democratic successor, Joe Biden, tensions remained high, with Washington imposing steep additional tariffs on Chinese solar cells, EV batteries, and electric vehicles, with ties at their lowest points in decades.
