The time has come to release Tinubu is urged by Nnamdi Kanu and the Igbo group.

It’s time to get out. Tinubu receives an appeal from Nnamdi Kanu and an Igbo organisation.

Ogbako Ndi Igbo Na Uwaniile, an Igbo pan-global cultural organisation, has called on President Bola Tinubu to look into Nnamdi Kanu’s case and take prompt action to guarantee his unconditional release, expressing profound concern over his ongoing detention as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

The group claims that Kanu has been unfairly deprived of his freedom through prolonged detention ever since his arrest in Kenya on June 29, 2021, and subsequent imprisonment in the Department of Security Service’s (DSS) custody “solely for exercising his fundamental human rights.”

The group contended that this was true even though Mazi Kanu, whom they referred to as a prisoner of conscience, “has not engaged in any acts of violence and has demonstrated no threat to public safety.” International human rights norms and the idea that no one should be penalised for freely voicing their opinions are both broken by his arrest and incarceration.

The organisation also suggested that Kanu’s solitary imprisonment is one of the causes of the current instability plaguing the South-East region of the nation in a statement signed by Chief Lord Okey Igbokwe and Media and Public Relations Advisor Ogbako Ndi-Igbo na Uwaniile.

The group contended that the unfavourable development has allowed criminals and non-state actors to wreak havoc, consequently jeopardising the region’s and the country’s economic progress.

In addition, the statement states that “Ogbako Ndi Igbo will want President Tinubu to take into account the fact that Nigeria’s Appeal Court dropped all charges against Kanu in October 2022 and used that as a basis to order for his immediate release.” The group also claimed that by doing this, the president would have shown that what benefits the goose also benefits the gander.

Because of this, Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo (also known as Igboho) is well-known for supporting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other proponents of an independent Yoruba homeland. Mr. Igboho was detained and later freed, but much to the astonishment of many Nigerians, he was spotted in London a few weeks ago, where he participated in a demonstration and petitioned British Prime Minister Mr. Keir Starmer to take the Yoruba Nation’s separation from Nigeria into consideration. What is the distinction between Sunday Adeyemo’s and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s alleged crimes, Mr. President?

We would also like to remind you, Mr. President, that Chief Frederick Nwajagu, one of the Ndi-Igbo leaders in Lagos State, was arrested in April 2023 on suspicion of threatening to send Eastern Security Network to Lagos to protect the Igbo people’s property, which was being destroyed and vandalised by thugs.

We think that Chief Nwajagu might have taken action since the Nigerian security forces are no longer able to defend or safeguard people and property in the nation. Chief Frederick Nwajagu has been remanded in detention as he goes through trials.

We would also like to remind you, Mr. President, that Asari Dokubo, the warlord of the Niger Delta, filmed himself brandishing an AK-47 rifle and threatening to kill all Igbo people. He also threatened to shoot down a military helicopter that was hovering around his home, saying that he could challenge the Nigerian military.

“Mr. President, Nigeria is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the freedom of expression and belief. One of the core tenets of civilised communities is the protection of life and property.

Chief Nwajagu and Mazi Kanu are deserving of these rights. We have faith that your office will treat this issue with the gravity and attention it requires. In addition to being a serious injustice, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Chief Nwajagu, and numerous other freedom fighters’ ongoing confinement sets a poor precedent for Nigeria’s defence of fundamental human rights.
