With the N250 million Canada trip, students criticise Ekiti lawmakers.

The Ekiti State House of Assembly, or EKHA, was criticised yesterday by the Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union, or FESSU, for a projected trip to Canada that would have cost more than N250 million.

Speaking at a news conference in Ado-Ekiti, Benjamin Onileowo, the Association’s president, called the trip insensitive given the urgent problems that the average person faces on a daily basis.

At the six-month anniversary of his administration, Onileowo expressed this worry, claiming that the seven-day trip would accommodate 18 members, five spouses, and four assistants.

He pointed out that if the money were allocated to the education sector, it would provide N50,000 in bursaries for more than 5,000 state students in their local communities.

His remarks: “Nigeria is still facing serious economic difficulties that have had a detrimental effect on all areas, particularly education.

It is imperative that we express our strong opinion that the aforementioned self-sponsored trip to Canada, which was organised by the Ekiti State House of Assembly, was a stupid idea. The moment is not right for such an attempt, particularly now that the state needs the cooperation of all parties involved to address urgent problems impacting the average person’s quality of life and to save our educational system.

“Our lawmakers, who consist of 18 members, 5 spouses, and 4 aides, will travel abroad for seven days at a cost of over N250 million.”

We demand that this action be re-examined and denounce this decision. Over 5,000 students from Ekiti State could receive N50,000 bursaries in their respective constituencies with N250 million.
