In four Anambra State local government areas, no fewer than 36 settlements have been submerged.
Anambra West, Ayamelum, a portion of Anambra East, and Ogbaru are the local government areas that are impacted.
Residents, particularly those in riverine areas, had been warned by the state government, which was led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to leave their areas in order to avoid regret.

Many people are now homeless as a result of the flooding, particularly those who thought it wouldn’t happen this year.
While some farmers had previously evacuated their produce prior to the flooding, others were taken aback by the sudden surge.
Mrs. Comfort Okonkwo, a local, stated that her family had moved to Otuocha in order to find safety.
According to the middle-aged farmer, before the flooding hit, they had already collected their produce at Anambra West.
To prevent being caught off guard, farmers in Mmiata Anam, Ukwala, and other communities in Anambra East and West had already harvested their crops.
Despite the warnings, Prince Chris Okwuosa of Umuzu in the Ogbaru local government region voiced alarm, stating that they did not believe the flood would occur again this year.
Since the typical time for flooding has gone, we assumed that the flood would not occur this year. The flood should have subsided by now, but it is arriving late,” he remarked.
The president general of the Akili Ogidi Community in Ogbaru, Sir Michael Chukwusa, added that the flood this year is occurring later than expected.
There have already been about eight communities submerged. People have been forced to migrate to higher ground due to the water in Atani, Ochuche, Ogwuikpele, Ogwuaniocha, and my community, Akili Ogidi,” he stated.
Felix Odumegwu, the state’s environment commissioner, said that the administration has taken proactive steps to address the issue.
He added, “Flooding occurs due to intense prolonged rainfall,” and blamed climate change for this year’s late flooding. This late flooding is significantly influenced by climate change. Around the world, severe weather has caused flash flooding in locations including Valencia in Spain, Italy, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and several US states.
