Canada tightens immigration requirements and cancels 10-year multiple entry visas

According to Canada, tourists would no longer be automatically granted 10-year multiple-entry visas.

In contrast to the usual extended validity time, the new guidelines, which were issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), provide immigration officers the authority to grant visas with shorter periods based on individual evaluations.

The IRCC claims that the modification is a component of a larger plan to regulate the rising cost of living, manage temporary immigration levels, and solve housing shortages.

Regular travellers to Canada may be subject to higher application fees and shorter-term visas under this updated policy, which might have an impact on people who travel frequently for business or pleasure.

Prior Policy
In the past, Canada provided both single-entry and multiple-entry tourist visas.

A multiple-entry visa, which permits several visits over a period of up to ten years or until one month prior to the passport’s expiration date, was automatically granted to all applicants.

Single-entry visas, which permitted only one entry into Canada, were only issued for particular circumstances, such participation in a single event or official visits.

What’s New?
Maximum-validity multiple-entry visas are no longer the norm in light of the revised guidelines.

Immigration officials will now evaluate each application separately and have more latitude in deciding whether to grant a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

This method enables different lengths to be customised to the individual requirements of travellers.

Multiple-entry visas granted to the maximum validity are no longer regarded as the standard document, according to new guidance. When evaluating the validity time and whether to grant a single or multiple-entry visa, officers are free to use their discretion, according to the IRCC.

Costs of Applying for a Visa
The cost of applying for a Canadian visitor visa is the same for both single-entry and multiple-entry visas, at CAD 100 per person.

More Comprehensive Immigration Policy
This change to the visa regime is in line with recent efforts by Canada to solve infrastructure issues and balance immigration numbers.

In addition, the goal for admissions of permanent residents will be lowered from 500,000 to 395,000 in 2025, with additional cuts anticipated in 2026 and 2027.

With the goal of adjusting to the nation’s changing economic and social demands, Canada’s new approach shows a cautious plan to manage immigration sustainably.
