
The majority of nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards’ Best African Music Performance category are Nigerian musicians.
The nominees were made public by the Recording Academy on Friday.
With returning competitors Burna Boy and Asake—the former receiving a nomination for his smash song “Higher”—Nigeria is leading the category this year.The latter, however, is for his partnership with Wizkid, “MMS.”
For his work on Chris Brown’s “Sensational,” Davido also receives his second nomination in the category, while Lojay receives his first Grammy nomination for the same song.
Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” also wins a nomination for Best African Music Performance, and Yemi Alade’s smash song “Tomorrow” earns her first solo nomination.
Tems’s debut album, “Born in the Wild,” is nominated for both Best Global Music Album and Best R&B single for “Burning,” making her the only African artist to receive three nominations in the global music categories.
For his second album, “HEIS,” young music phenomenon Rema. is nominated in the Best Global Music Album category.
Jordan Adetunji, who is well-known for his viral song “Kelani,” and his song “Bloody Civilian,” which was featured on the soundtrack to Bob Marley’s “One Love,” are among the other Nigerian celebrities nominated for Grammy Awards.
With his sixth consecutive Grammy nomination this year, Burna Boy is the most nominated Nigerian artist to date.
African music has gained more recognition on the international scene with Burna Boy’s initial nomination for Best Global Music Album at the 2020 Grammys and his victory for “Twice as Tall” in 2021.

With 11 nominations for her genre-bending album Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé is leading the Grammy pack globally. She is contending in pop, rap, country, and Americana categories in addition to record, song, and album of the year.
Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Sabrina Carpenter are next in line with six nominations each, followed by Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone, who each have seven nominations.
