Onazi explains why Boniface finds it difficult to score goals for the Super Eagles.

A new FIFA window has arrived, and several national teams are once again preparing for international matches. Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be just as busy with matches against Rwanda and the Republic of Benin in Abidjan and Uyo, respectively.

Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager, has already revealed his team, which is primarily composed of players from outside. Eguavoen also showed generosity by including a couple home talents in the team; it remains to be seen if they will be utilised or not.

Nigeria is fortunate to have one of the most talented teams on the continent, but their recent performance has not kept pace with the quality available to them. Ironically, the Super Eagles struggle to score goals in the majority of their games even though they have a very visible and formidable attacking roster in Africa and international football. Among the Super Eagles’ formidable attacking lineup are Victor Osimhen, Taiwo Awoniyi, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze.

The Super Eagles’ assault is weak and oddly sluggish, save for Victor Osimhen, who is on loan from Napoli, and Ademola Lookman, who plays for Atalanta. The biggest concern is the inefficiency of Victor Boniface, a striker for Bayer Leverkusen who scores goals for the team with reckless abandon but hasn’t been able to repeat his club success for the national squad. Dele-Bashiru, an aggressive midfielder for Lazio, has been saving the day in recent games. In Uyo, he scored the game-winning goal against Libya.

Boniface only has two goals to show for his nine caps. When Nigeria defeated Sao Tome & Principe 6-0 in a 2023 AFCON qualifier, he scored his first goal for his country. In October 2023, Boniface scored his second goal for his country in a friendly match against Saudi Arabia, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Ogenyi Onazi, a former Nigerian international, recently discussed Victor Boniface’s issues with the Super Eagles and the reasons the forward hasn’t been able to score as much for the Eagles as he did for his German team.

“Everything you say in our country will be interpreted differently,” he remarked. Everything I say about this topic reflects my feelings and personal viewpoint.

“In my opinion, as everyone is aware, we currently have the most talented national team in a long time, and they should perform admirably. Regretfully, things are not proceeding as they should.

He said, “Victor Boniface is an amazing player,” in reference to his goal drought with the national team. Clubside and the national team are two altogether different entities. Players on the club side are familiar with Boniface’s style of play. Every day, they see themselves more than they do their family members or girlfriends. Thus, they mix daily. One must raise enquiries if he fails to score in the clubside.

The national team is different, according to Onazi. “When the national team arrives, they play a match in less than three days. How can you expect them to understand themselves or blend in well enough to provide their best effort?

Players like Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze are examples of the type of players we have up front (in the attack); they hang onto the ball, dribble, cut in, and shoot. extremely different from his teammates at Leverkusen, who can pass the ball to him without looking because they know where he’s running. These are the traits and details we need to understand why he isn’t contributing to the national team’s goals.

diligent worker

In order to avoid being left alone up front without the ball, Victor, who works so hard for the national team, occasionally dips deep to collect the ball. Our midfield players, in my opinion, need to do much more to support him. In my opinion, the striker is usually my first choice when I obtain the ball while playing (albeit I still play). Since you are my first choice, I always tell you, the striker, to initiate contact when I am playing. Only when I see that you’re not ready do I begin to consider other possibilities. This is what I personally think.

Victor Boniface is a really talented player, he agreed. “A wonderful player,” he remarked.

It was repeated by another former international, Ifeanyi Udeze, who hosted Onazi on his early morning show on Sport Radio Brila fm: “The national team lacks a good playmaker who can send passes that can result in goals; simple, defense-splitting passes that can create goal making opportunities.” This explains why players like Victor Boniface are still lacking goals.
