Terra Kulture’s founder, Austen-Peters, stated that her choice to start the festival was motivated by her dedication to developing Nigerian theatre talent and her wealth of 22 years of experience in the field. “As a front-liner with Terra Kulture 22 years later, creating jobs and opportunities with an academy that has trained over 24,000 young people today, I realised that I had no choice but to do this festival,” she said.
The festival, which has the backing of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, seeks to establish Lagos as a major centre for theatre worldwide. Austen-Peters emphasised the transformative power of theatre in society when she proclaimed, “We will make this the best theatre location in West Africa, in Africa, and in the world.”
The press conference was hosted by Governor Sanwo-Olu, who emphasised the project’s perfect alignment with the state’s economic master plan and showed his administration’s dedication to it.
This project is an essential component of Lagos’s larger plan to become a creative and cultural hub, with tourism and entertainment serving as major engines of economic expansion.
With more than 24,000 young artists trained and innumerable job prospects in the creative industry, Terra Kulture’s proven track record of success offers a solid basis for this new endeavour. This ambitious festival has been made possible by the academy’s achievement in developing local talent while upholding international standards.
