According to local media, South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan was detained on Wednesday on suspicion of misusing the organization’s funds for personal gain.
The Johannesburg High Court will only hear Jordaan’s submission on Thursday. Jordaan, who played a key role in getting the 2010 World Cup to South Africa, attempted to stop his impending arrest on Tuesday.
According to South Africa police spokeswoman Katlego Mogale, the arrest is related to a police raid on the SAFA offices in March.
Without permission from the SAFA board, the president of SAFA used the organization’s resources for his own benefit between 2014 and 2018, using a public relations firm and a private security firm for his own safety, according to Mogale.
Later on Wednesday, Jordaan, 73, and his alleged co-accused, businessman Trevor Neethling and SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo, are scheduled to appear in court.
A request for comment from Reuters was not answered by Jordaan or SAFA; nonetheless, he rejects any wrongdoing in his petition to the court asking to prevent his arrest. (NAN/Reuters)
