Godwin Emmanuel, a 23-year-old suspect in an armed robbery, has admitted to taking a police officer’s cell phone while being taken to an Osogbo police station.

Emmanuel acknowledged stealing the phone from inside the police vehicle after being taken into custody by the Osun State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit along with two other people. He stated that after being arrested, he planned to utilise it to get in touch with his family.

“In Ile-Ife, I was arrested for armed robbery. I took a phone from the police patrol vehicle on the way to the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo. “I was unaware that it was a police officer’s phone,” Emmanuel remarked.

He clarified that in order to contact his family, who were not informed of his incarceration, he took out the SIM card and snuck the phone into his cell.

At the time, I had no idea what I was doing. Later, they located the phone after searching me in the cell. Tell them to pardon me, please. “I promise not to do it again,” he begged.

Emmanuel, a native of Ikorodu, Lagos State, apologised and begged for forgiveness.

Statement from the Police

The Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, disclosed during a press conference in Osogbo that Emmanuel and his co-conspirators, Olajide Kareem (28), and Mike Emmanuel (33), were involved in an armed rape and robbery incident along the Ilesa-Osu Express Road.

Opalola revealed that during the heist, one of the victims was sexually assaulted. After perpetrating the crimes in Osun State, the suspects escaped to Ikorodu, Lagos State, where they were apprehended.

The accused have admitted to being part of the gang responsible for the armed robbery. Other members who are still at large are being sought after. The accused will face charges following a comprehensive investigation,” Opalola said.

Even while investigations continue to guarantee justice for the victims, the case demonstrates the police’s diligence in fighting crime.
