After their convoy was attacked in Ubakala in the Umuahia South council area of Abia State, a police officer was killed and another was wounded by gunmen.
This comes four days earlier, at a checkpoint in Umuopara, Umuahia, close to the Abia-Imo border, two soldiers were also killed by unidentified gunmen.
The gunmen assaulted the police officers’ convoy near Ubakala at around 9 p.m. on Sunday. The officers were reportedly travelling with one of the state’s federal politicians.
But when the attack occurred, the politician was not in the convoy.
The convoy, which included the two police officers and a driver in a Toyota Corolla, had been blocked by the black-clad gunmen wearing police jackets, according to police sources who spoke to Vanguard.
After identifying themselves as police officers, the attackers started shooting at the officers.
One cop was killed in the resulting firing, and the other was injured and thought to be dead.
The source further said that when police from the neighbouring Ubakala Division arrived and opened fire, the gunmen left the area.
Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Maureen Chinaka, has not yet replied to a message sent to her cell phone at the time this report was filed.
