In Anambra State, gunmen implementing the Monday sit-at-home order have seriously wounded Mr. Chimame Ezigbo, the President General (PG) of Abatete, and killed four other people.
The fourth victim was slain near Ukpo Junction in the Dunukofia Local Government Area, while the other three were Abatete Vigilante Service members who were with the PG at the time of the attack.
Residents were taken by surprise when the simultaneous attacks on both neighbourhoods took place between 8 and 10 a.m., prompting many who had left for work to come home right away.
According to an eyewitness in Abatete, Mr. Ezigbo was shot in the head and taken in serious condition to a nearby hospital. The bodies of the three vigilantes who were with him were left at the place after they perished immediately.
Our PG’s recovery is something we are praying for. The rounds hit his skull, knocking him out. That he was singled out is stunning. This individual has put forth a great deal of effort to keep Abatete peaceful. The eyewitness remarked, “Our community is in turmoil.”
In the second incident at Ukpo, the victim was identified as a member of the local vigilante organisation and a motorcyclist.
Because of the attackers’ indiscriminate firing, the cyclist was struck. “I am unable to verify whether he was singled out,” said another witness.
Investigations into the occurrences have begun, according to a police source, and efforts are being made to capture the offenders.
The attacks occurred at a time when many people thought the state was becoming less strict about the Monday sit-at-home directive.
