Many schools in Bayelsa under water

Several schools in the primarily riverine state are still under water, according to NDV data, and others are being inhabited by flood victims.

Flood has not yet subsided.

Flood has not yet subsided. The 2024 flood break was prolonged by one week by the state government, via the Ministry of Education, to give the floodwaters that flooded most of the state’s schools time to subside.

It should be noted that the state administration had originally planned for the schools to reopen on Monday, November 18, following the flood break. However, this had to be changed to Monday, November 25.

A new date for the start of public, private secondary, and primary schools has been set, according to a circular issued by Simon-Peter Okene, the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Education.

Some locals are concerned that if the floods continue, the new start date might be moved once more because it is returning more slowly than it did the previous year.

“The current flood situation observed in a reasonable number of school premises across the state is the reason for the extension time,” Okene stated.

Massive contamination

According to the government, private school operators will be required to strictly follow the state’s officially sanctioned school calendar. Before classes resume, stakeholders in the education sector should make sure that all school safety procedures, such as mowing the lawn and fumigating the buildings and grounds, are completed.

“The government would also like to express its sympathy to all Bayelsans who have been impacted by the flood in one way or another,” he stated.
