The Chairman of the Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria, Mr. Eze Chukwu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to extend amnesty to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Chukwu emphasized that granting amnesty to IPOB, similar to the approach taken with former Niger Delta militants, could significantly reduce the ongoing violence in Nigeria’s South-East region.
Chukwu highlighted that IPOB emerged from the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). Both groups, he explained, were established to address longstanding grievances over perceived injustices against the Igbo people.
By addressing these underlying issues through amnesty, Chukwu believes the government can foster peace and reconciliation in the region. The appeal aims to promote a strategy that prioritizes dialogue and healing, ensuring stability for the South-East and Nigeria as a whole.
Amnesty to IPOB is a step Chukwu insists could pave the way for lasting peace, echoing the success seen in similar efforts with the Niger Delta militants.
“The ongoing Biafra agitation has been a deeply rooted issue, but its origins might have been avoided if the Igbo had been granted their rightful place in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape. Many believe that addressing these historical grievances could have prevented the rise of movements like IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) and resolved the unrest much earlier.
Now, with the recent arrest of key IPOB figures, it is a pivotal moment for the Federal Government to act decisively. Swift action is needed to prevent the emergence of new leaders within the movement and to tackle the root causes of the agitation.
Extraditing Simon Ekpa and Proposing Amnesty
A notable suggestion has been made for the government to expedite the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure in the IPOB movement, while simultaneously presenting clear strategies to address the South-East crisis. One of the proposed solutions includes granting amnesty to IPOB members, similar to the approach used to pacify Niger Delta militants.
By offering amnesty, the government could encourage IPOB members to lay down their arms, calm tensions, and create a pathway for reintegration into society. Such measures could also prevent the rise of future leaders within the movement, ensuring long-term stability in the region.
A Political Solution: Tinubu’s Opportunity to Lead
There is a strong call for President Tinubu to adopt a political solution to this age-old problem. Implementing a comprehensive strategy to restore peace and unity in the South-East would not only solidify his legacy but also earn him recognition as a leader who achieved lasting peace in one of Nigeria’s most volatile regions.

“If President Tinubu can successfully resolve this issue, he will be remembered both in life and death as a transformative leader,” stated a prominent observer.
Ending the Sit-at-Home Crisis
The arrest of Simon Ekpa has been widely seen as a significant step toward ending the disruptive sit-at-home orders and the violent activities associated with them. Many believe this move paves the way for the restoration of normalcy and economic recovery in the South-East.
Establishing the South-East Development Commission
To complement the amnesty program, the establishment of a South-East Development Commission has been proposed. This body would oversee the rehabilitation and reintegration of former IPOB members, ensuring they have opportunities to contribute positively to society. Such an initiative could accelerate development in the region and rebuild trust between the people and the government.
