In an extraordinary gesture, Gowon dispatched his wife to personally deliver the letter to Abacha late at night. “I pleaded with him, emphasizing that leadership is a call to do good, not evil,” Gowon said. He expressed joy that Obasanjo not only survived imprisonment but later became Nigeria’s president in 1999 after Abacha’s death.
Obasanjo, who was unaware of Gowon’s intervention, publicly thanked him during the event, referring to Gowon as “my boss” and appreciating his pivotal role in securing his release. This emotional moment highlighted the importance of unity and goodwill in Nigerian history.
The event also celebrated efforts to foster peace and reconciliation in Plateau State, which has faced numerous security challenges. For more details, check out the full story on BusinessDay
