The Governor emphasised continuous efforts to advance inclusion and improve the well-being of PWDs throughout the state in a goodwill statement for the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which was released by his Special Assistant on PWDs, Comrade David Anyaele.
“Today’s commemoration provides another opportunity to reflect on efforts towards ensuring the well-being of Abians with disabilities and their participation in the socio-economic development of our state,” the governor said, underscoring the significance of the event.
In accordance with the Abia State Disability Law, Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to lowering the prevalence of disabilities through investments in healthcare, education, and accessible infrastructure. In line with his government’s credo and vision for people with disabilities, he praised this year’s IDPD celebration’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
The Governor listed several ongoing accomplishments, such as the appointment of six PWDs to positions of leadership. creation of a disability commission in Abia State that is made up completely of people with disabilities. dedication to incorporating PWDs into all facets of society, politics, the economy, and culture.
Governor Otti vehemently condemned the marginalisation, stigma, and discrimination that people with impairments experience, saying:
“There is no discussion of people with disabilities without talking about people with disabilities. As a result, we reject all types of stigma, prejudice, and isolation towards Abians due to their disabilities.
He promised that PWDs will receive the proper acknowledgement and be fully included in the developmental objectives of his administration.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering an atmosphere where PWDs may flourish and make significant contributions to the advancement of the state, while wishing all Abians a joyous IDPD celebration.
