African airlines are growing by 10.4%

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), demand for airlines operating in the Americas and the Middle East declined in October 2024 compared to October 2023.African airlines are growing by 10.4%

However, according to IATA, demand for African carriers increased 10.4% year over year, showing growth.

According to IATA, African airlines’ capacity increased by up to 5.3% year over year, and their load factor increased to 73.2%, despite Europe having the greatest load factors.

According to the Air Transport Association’s October 2024 figures, total demand, expressed in revenue passenger kilometres, increased 7.1% over October 2023.

According to the report, “Total capacity, expressed in available seat kilometres, increased 6.1% annually.” In October, the load factor was 83.9%.

Demand from overseas increased 9.5% from October 2023. The load factor increased to 83.5%, and capacity increased by 8.6% year over year.

In comparison to October 2023, domestic demand increased by 3.5%. The load factor was 84.5 percent, while capacity increased 2.0 percent annually.

“The steady improvement in load factors is just as important as the continued strong and stable demand,” stated Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, in response to the development. It demonstrates how well the sector is doing at moving people around more effectively.

In the 1990s, average seat factors were approximately 67%; today, they are over 83%. Politicians considering taxing passengers on aeroplanes in an effort to cut emissions would be wise to take note of this. Even if fewer people travel because taxes make it too costly, this does not necessarily translate into lower emissions because flights would still operate, although with fewer people on board. Decades of hard-won gains would be undone. In order to maximise the economic and social advantages of flying while minimising emissions, we must see the planes fully occupied.
