The suspects were apprehended at Gueskeru, a vital border town that connects the Republic of Niger and Yobe State in Nigeria.
Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, a spokesperson for the MNJTF, said that preliminary investigations showed that the suspects were travelling from different towns in Nigeria to the Lake Chad region, supposedly to go fishing. But fears were raised because the borders aren’t very solid and have become safe havens for terrorist groups, like the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has attacked border communities more than once.
Preliminary investigations, as stated by Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, spokesperson for the MNJTF, indicated that the suspects were allegedly travelling from a variety of Nigerian cities to the Lake Chad region for the purpose of engaging in fishing activities. Nevertheless, there were apprehensions regarding the porous borders, which have been transformed into havens for terrorist organisations, such as the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has perpetrated numerous attacks on border communities.
The intercepted group sounded security alarms, as the potential for a substantial number of physically fit men to enter terrorist-infested regions was a significant concern. Sector 4 troops halted their journey in response, thereby initiating a comprehensive profiling and interrogation process to evaluate their motivations and guarantee that they do not pose a threat to regional security.
The MNJTF reiterated its dedication to regional security, civilian protection, and counterterrorism initiatives, underscoring the significance of increased border vigilance and collaboration among troop-contributing nations in the fight against cross-border terrorism.
