Two Assistant Inspectors General of Police were also given punishments. One got a reprimand for not following legal instructions, and the other got a letter of warning for being careless.

Ikechukwu Ani, a spokesman, said in a statement, “The commission also approved the reduction in ranks of nineteen (19) other senior police officers, one assistant commissioner of police, one chief superintendent, two superintendents, two deputy superintendents, and thirteen assistant superintendents.”

“Other officers who were found guilty were given different punishments, such as harsh reprimands and letters of warning.”

“The Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force will also bring charges against most of the officers who were fired.”

I asked the Inspector General of Police for more information about three pending disciplinary cases and they were put on hold.

“The Commission also looked at 23 petitions and appeals and nine legal matters or court decisions.”

So, the important decisions the PSC made at the end of its first Plenary Meeting in Abuja had an impact on 109 Pending Disciplinary Matters (PDM) and 23 appeals petition cases, along with 13 court orders that sought to enforce the decisions.

The statement read, “Earlier, the Commission had looked at and agreed to suggestions on a number of matters related to promotions. These suggestions were then sent to the Inspector General of Police to be put into action.”

DIG Argungu, the chairman of the Commission, said that from now on, the Commission would quickly look into police disciplinary matters so that police officers who don’t want to move up in their careers could be freed and those who did something wrong could serve their sentences.

He said that the Commission would not be kind to police officers who get involved in civil cases like land disputes, divorce, or rent disputes.

DIG Argungu said that the courts should be left to do their jobs and that the police should focus on crimes and life threats.

At the Plenary Meeting, which was led by Commission Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu rtd, were also present Hon. Commissioner and Secretary to the Commission DIG Taiwo Lakanu rtd and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani.
