Gulf War History and Impact

The history of missile interceptions at sea highlights the dynamic interplay between technology and strategy, showcasing how naval forces respond to ever-evolving threats. From the Gulf War in 1991 to contemporary conflicts, these events underscore the critical role of missile defense systems in securing maritime operations.Gulf War History and Impact

The Gulf War: A Turning Point

On February 25, 1991, during the Gulf War, the USS Missouri and HMS Gloucester faced an Iraqi Silkworm missile attack. While USS Missouri’s countermeasures deployed chaff to confuse incoming threats, the Phalanx CIWS system on USS Jarrett mistakenly targeted the chaff, inadvertently striking Missouri with a few rounds. Meanwhile, HMS Gloucester successfully intercepted the Iraqi missile using a Sea Dart, marking the first missile-on-missile engagement in naval history.

Yemeni Coast Escalations: 2016

The USS Mason was at the forefront of modern naval defense when it came under missile attacks in the Red Sea, attributed to Houthi rebels. The ship’s response involved advanced systems like SM-2 and ESSM missiles, coupled with decoys, marking a significant moment as the first combat use of vertical-launch anti-air missiles against active threats. Despite uncertainties about whether all missiles were intercepted or fell into the sea, these incidents demonstrated the increasing sophistication of maritime missile defenses.

Houthi Missile Threats: 2023-2024

The Red Sea has become a hotspot for missile activity, with Houthi rebels targeting both military and commercial vessels. Notable events include:

  • December 2023: The USS Laboon intercepted three ballistic missiles, demonstrating the operational effectiveness of SM-6 systems.
  • January 2024: A coordinated attack involving drones and missiles against international shipping lanes was thwarted by a coalition of U.S. and U.K. naval forces.
  • February 2024: The USS Laboon and USS Gravely continued to neutralize anti-ship threats in the Gulf of Aden, leveraging systems like the Phalanx CIWS to protect key maritime routes.
