On Thursday, South Korean prosecutors announced that they have initiated an official investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol’s efforts to implement martial law in the nation. The investigation also includes former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min.

Kim, who had already resigned in the wake of the incident, has been subjected to a travel ban and is prohibited from departing South Korea, according to the police. The president is being investigated for “insurrection.”

On Wednesday, the Democratic Party, the opposition party in the country, introduced a bill to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol for his brief declaration of martial law. Additionally, ministers began to submit their resignations.

As the impeachment motion was introduced, Democratic Party member Kim Seung-won stated in the National Assembly, “The Yoon regime’s declaration of emergency martial law caused great confusion and fear among our people.”

“The individuals and their aides who safeguarded parliament safeguarded us with their bodies.” He continued, “The people have prevailed, and it is now our responsibility to safeguard them.”

“It is imperative that we immediately suspend President Yoon’s authority.” He has committed a historic, indelible crime against the people, whose anxiety must be alleviated in order for them to resume their daily lives.

The opposition is seeking a vote by Saturday, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The motion will be discarded in accordance with the law if it is not voted on within 72 hours of its introduction in the parliamentary chamber.

The People Power Party (PPP), which is currently in power in Yoon’s country, has declared its intention to vote against the motion. However, the opposition requires only eight defections in order for the bill to be passed.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, 18 PPP lawmakers have already voted to rescind Yoon’s martial law order in an emergency sitting. Party leader Han Dong-hun has referred to the President’s actions as “unconstitutional.”

Nevertheless, he stated that his party would continue to vote against impeachment in order to “prevent damage to citizens and supporters caused by unprepared chaos.”

In the event that Yoon is impeached and suspended from exercising power, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would assume the role of leader in accordance with South Korea’s constitution.

New elections would be conducted within 60 days in the event that he resigns or is otherwise removed from office.

Resignations of ministers
Meanwhile, Yoon accepted the resignation of Defence Minister Kim Yong Hyun on Thursday. Kim Yong Hyun had initially proposed the idea of declaring martial law, as indicated by both the impeachment filings and a senior military official.

As a replacement, Yoon has proposed Choi Byung-hyuk, a retired four-star general who is currently serving as South Korea’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Yonhap also reports that the finance, education, and justice ministers intend to resign from their positions.

Following a night of chaos in Seoul, Yoon made the unprecedented decision to declare martial law, which was subsequently lifted a few hours later after a unanimous vote by the National Assembly. These actions were taken 24 hours after the chaotic night.

parliamentary aides employed furniture blockades and fire extinguishers to prevent armed troops from entering the chamber during an emergency midnight sitting, during which the vote was conducted.

A fire extinguisher is sprayed by National Assembly employees at the National Assembly in Seoul, South Korea, at soldiers.

It’s political suicide.
US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said on Wednesday that Yoon had made a very bad decision.

“This is a powerful symbol of the fact that people were prepared to come out and make clear that this was a deeply illegitimate process,” he added. “One that would be met by the will of the people, and frankly, the will of the legislative bodies.”

An analyst told the Associated Press that what Yoon did was “political suicide.”
