The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has verified that the ongoing repair of the new 150,000 barrels per day Port Harcourt Refining Company has achieved a completion rate of over 90%.NNPC has completed 90% of the P’Harcourt refinery

Isiyaku Abdullahi, the Group Executive Vice President of Downstream, stated this during a visit to the facility in Rivers State on Monday. The visit was attended by labour leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

The development, which occurs just weeks after the old 60,000bpd plant at the Port Harcourt refinery commenced operations, is yet another stride towards the country’s energy self-sufficiency.

It is important to note that the PHRC formally resumed operations on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, following a series of postponements of its resumption dates by its managers, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The Port Harcourt refinery, which has recently undergone rehabilitation, has also begun exporting refined petroleum products. It has sold its initial cargo of low sulphur straight-run fuel oil to Gulf Transport and Trading Limited, a company based in Dubai.

The NNPCL EVC downstream has stated that the upgraded 150,000 barrels facility will resolve all fuel insufficiency challenges and transform Nigeria into a net exporter of refined petroleum products, despite the fact that the facility has restricted its supply to its retail stations.

After conducting a tour of the facility, the NNPCL official informed the trade union leaders that the most recent report from the contractor indicated that more than 90% of the rehabilitation work had been completed.

Nevertheless, he did not specify a potential date for the commencement of operations.

He stated, “This asset is currently undergoing rehabilitation or an upgrade.” The rehabilitation process is predetermined, and upon completion, the refinery will commence operations. It is a state-of-the-art facility in comparison to any refinery in the world.

“According to the contractors’ report and their assessment, the refinery is currently over 90% complete and will be completed as soon as possible.” We are ensuring that we receive a great value for our money and are following through. Then, we can combine 60,000 barrels to achieve a total of 210,000 barrels. This would bolster our refining processes and products by providing the multifaceted benefits that refining products would provide. Then, we can accumulate an adequate quantity of products and export them to other nations.

Ibrahim Onoja, the refinery’s Managing Director, toured the plant for the fact-finding team.

“This is the new Port Harcourt refinery, a 150,000 barrels per day plant that was commissioned in 1989.” The rehabilitation work is currently underway at the new Port Harcourt refinery, while we were simultaneously working on the old Port Harcourt refinery. The old one has been finished, and the plant is currently operational. The new Port Harcourt refinery is currently in an advanced stage of development, but it is crucial to note that size is a critical factor.
