The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) is preparing to prosecute Blessed Happy Homes Superstore in Festac, Amuwo-Odofin LGA, for selling expired goods, endangering public health.

The superstore on 6th Avenue, 13th Road, Festac Town, was closed for health and safety violations. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab says the state government will ensure accountability and prosecute to deter others.

LASCOPA found expired baby milk, beverages, body creams, and perfumes in the supermarket during a recent operation. The store manager resisted police, but legal action resulted in a bench warrant for the owner.

According to LASCOPA General Manager Afolabi Solebo, the owner has ignored multiple summonses and will appear before the Magistrate Court at the Lagos Taskforce Headquarters in Bolade–Oshodi on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

We are deeply concerned that expired products, some from April 2023, are still sold in our markets. Solebo said this act threatened unsuspecting consumers’ health and safety.

Due to the prevalence of expired goods, Solebo advised consumers to check expiration dates and product labels before buying.

“We are intensifying our crackdown on errant businesses across the state,” Solebo said. “Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has zero tolerance for consumer rights violations and unethical business practices. The administration encourages business growth but requires compliance.

LASCOPA will inspect more facilities in the coming days to prevent expired product sales and protect public health. The agency emphasised ethical practices and consumer protection laws to ensure a safe and trustworthy marketplace.

The case shows the Lagos State Government’s commitment to consumer safety and fair business.
