Revolutionizing Identity and Access

The digital identity cards will integrate the National Identity Number (NIN) with secure digital solutions, enabling millions of Nigerians to access financial services seamlessly. According to NIMC, the rollout will simplify identification processes, reduce barriers to banking, and empower underbanked populations.

Aliyu Aziz, Director-General of NIMC, highlighted the transformative potential of this initiative:

“This marks a significant milestone in ensuring every Nigerian has a digital identity. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about inclusion, empowerment, and building a stronger economy.”

Partnership for Impact

NIBSS is leveraging its robust infrastructure to ensure that the digital cards are interoperable across banking platforms and payment systems. Collaborating with banks, fintech companies, and telecom operators, the rollout promises to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities.

Asif Ibrahim, an executive at NIBSS, noted:

“This is a game-changer for financial inclusion. By providing secure digital cards, we are removing traditional barriers and opening doors for millions of Nigerians.”

Boosting Financial Inclusion

Nigeria’s financial inclusion rate currently lags behind global benchmarks, with significant gaps in rural areas and among women. By digitizing identity systems, this initiative addresses critical challenges like access to credit, mobile banking, and government services.

Timeline and Access

The digital cards are expected to roll out in phases, starting in urban centers before expanding to rural areas. Citizens can obtain their cards at designated enrollment centers nationwide, with options for mobile access.

This initiative aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s financial inclusion strategy and supports the government’s goal of achieving 95% inclusion by 2024.
